The verse is 1 John 2:25. It reads, “And this is the promise which He Himself made to us; eternal life.” It is a great verse to reflect upon in the Easter season. And, actually, it is a verse that is comforting for us to reflect upon all the time.
My mother-in-law recently passed away. So, I have been thinking about death and life quite a bit lately. It is only natural, I guess. I have been pondering my mother-in-law’s life, my life, and the life of other loved ones. Questions pop into my mind. What is death like? What is eternal life like? Have I been good enough? What can I do to better live my life?
My husband and I still talk about his mother and to her as if she were still here at times. Can she hear us where she is at this time? We are not sure. Yet, it is comforting and allows us to still feel a connection with her as well as believe in the eternal life, which she was promised.
I know that there are times when I fear death. I don’t know if it is that I fear that I haven’t been good enough or just fear of the unknown. Although, I know that if I choose a verse such as this one, that my fears should be relieved. And, if a verse such as this comes to mind or I think to look one up, often times I do feel better. To be honest, sometimes I don’t think to even look.
I can tell you, that for me, a verse like this, which is a reminder of God’s promise to us, is comforting at times when my loved ones have passed. I don’t feel bad for them, but know they are in a better place. When it is my time to pass away, I hope that this verse will comfort my spirit as well as the spirits of all my loved ones I leave behind.
