Hello everyone.  The title of this blog is "What is New with Jodi Desautels?" so I thought I would let you in on some things that I am doing.
Actually, I have quite a few pots in the fire right now.  First, I am looking to broaden my exposure for my books and sites.  I am currently working to get my books approved to go into a local chain.  I am so excited about that!  Also, I am looking for author interviews, book reviews, and places to post my books.
I have started researching ways to develop and sell character products as well.  I would love to brand Clarinda Cloud!  She would make a wonderful character for various products.  I have an email into a company that makes stuffed book characters now.  If any of you know anything about product development, I would love to hear from you.
Oh, and did you know that she is a spokescloud on bullying prevention and anti-bullying causes?  I will continue to promote her as such.  Bullying is an issue that has touched my heart.  I want to do what I can to help prevent it.
After a long hiatus, I have started illustrating again.  I am currently working on an illustration for a book that I first published, but had to buy back the publishing rights.  I am looking forward to re-illustrating and re-publishing this book.
I have also been adding to and tweaking my websites.  I have added an "events" tab to my website.  If you would like to have me speak at your school, library, bookstore, or event, please feel free to contact me.
I am also running a sale on my online tutoring services.  The discounted price ends June 15th, so sign up now!  This is great for summertime learning, renewing skills, learning new skills, or just having help with homework.  I help people of all ages and abilities.  Also, it would be great for aspiring children's authors who may want some individualized help and encouragement.
And, did I tell you that I lost the last game of backgammon between my husband and I?  Ugh, and I lost the last game of pinochle too!  I guess my game playing hasn't been what it has been.  Maybe it is because my creative mind has been overpowering my game playing mind.  LOL!

Hello everyone!  It is a new year with new beginnings.  I embrace my goals, adventures, and blessings for this year.
I have many new things planned for this year.  What about you?  Please feel free to mention them in the comments.
One thing that I am doing for this year is making some changes on all of my websites.  My author site (this one), my character's site (www.ClarindaCloud.com), and my education site (www.DUOEducation.com) all have some changes for the new year.  I hope you will take a moment to check them out.
With this blog, true to it's name, I plan to use more of my own thoughts, whims, aspirations, works in progress, happenings, creations, etc.  I will still do author and illustrator interviews.  However, I have a new page just for that called "Author/Illustrator Interviews & Book Promotions."  I hope you check it out.  I already have an interview with Rhonda Patton posted.
Also, some of you may be interested in a new feature on my education site, DUO Education.  On Mondays, I will be posting "Story Starters & Writing Prompts."  Well, it will be one or the other each Monday.  The first writing prompt was posted this Monday.

An Author Interview with Gloria Repp

12/18/2013

Picture
Hello everyone!  Today, I am welcoming author  Gloria Repp.  Please help her feel comfortable.

Now, let's learn a little about this author.

Gloria, please, tell us a little about yourself.

As I think about my books, I realize that they all have elements of adventure or mystery, and they often include wild creatures. I grew up in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest, and it was there I learned a love for wilderness and the ocean. Over the years, my experiences gained from raising three children, teaching school, and editing have made useful contributions to my work.

After writing twelve children’s books, I transitioned from traditional publishing to Indie publishing, and I have found it a happy but challenging experience. I take frequent research trips to explore New Jersey’s beautiful Pine Barrens—my latest setting inspiration—and have found it a wonderful location for my series about a brave little treefrog: Tales of Friendship Bog.

What is the title of your book? What is it about?

My most recent book is Catch a Robber, Book 4 in the Tales of Friendship Bog series. In this story, Pibbin, a tiny but courageous treefrog, takes two friends with him to track down the sneaky lizard-robber who has disappeared into Shadow Swamp.  http://www.amazon.com/Catch-Robber-Tale-Friendship-Tales-ebook/dp/B00FIBM1CQ/

What inspired you to write this book?

One spring, I heard the Pine Barrens Treefrogs singing, wonk-wonk-wonk, and I held one of the little creatures in my hand. I asked myself, “Could anything so tiny also be brave? What adventures might he have?”

The idea grew. I would write about the adventures of Pibbin, a Pine Barrens Treefrog, beautifully colored in green, lavender, orange, and white. He would live in a bog I’d visited, near the near the ruins of a town named Friendship. Although no bigger than my thumb, he would be brave, a frog who dared anything on behalf of his friends.

Drawing on my experience as a teacher, I wrote about Pibbin’s adventures with simple words and sentences so that children who were beginning to read could enjoy them. I called the series Tales of Friendship Bog.

You write for children. Is it easy?

Writing for children is often considered a good place for the novice writer to start, but in reality, the genre is both difficult and demanding. It is difficult because of limitations on vocabulary, sentence structure, and concept, and the need for good presentation (sufficient white space and illustrations). Entire books have been written on each of these subjects. It is demanding because of the dual audiences involved. Children want a story that is exciting or compelling or fun, as well as easy to read. Parents and educators want the story to have intrinsic value. Many adults will use the story as a springboard for discussion and teaching about traits such as generosity, friendship, or compassion.

Stories for children abound that are shallow or silly or muddled, but the best children’s book writers will have a vision for excellence—and follow it.

(As a children's author myself, I can totally relate to this!)

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing for about thirty-five years. I wrote my first story for my youngest son, and my eldest son illustrated it. The result was less than professional, but it was a start.

Where do you market your books?

I market my Indie-published books exclusively on Amazon, for the time being. Amazon does an excellent job of printing and digitizing my books, and I have so many more books to write that I don’t want to spend precious minutes on other marketing venues.

Do you have other books?

I have several other books for children, from ages 5 to 12 and up; the best place to see them is on my website: http://gloriarepp.com/

What is your hope for your book?

My hope for the Tales series is twofold. First, I would like children, especially reluctant readers, to simply enjoy a good story. Second, I would like the children to absorb a little about the concept of how a good friend might act.

What is a little known fact about you that you can share?

My family knows this, but not many others: I am a morning person. I like to get up early to write or to read, and I even sing before breakfast. In fact, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.

(Ugh!  A morning person!  I cannot relate with you on that!)

Besides writing, what are some of your other hobbies or interests?

I like to read—endlessly, omnivorously, every chance I get—it’s almost a character flaw. I have to be stern with myself or we’d have dry cereal every night for supper, except that I like to cook too, and my family enjoys that. I also like the outdoors and such activities as hiking, canoeing, and kayaking.

(I enjoy reading, kayaking, and canoeing as well.)

Do you illustrate your own books?

I do not. If I could, I would—believe me—because I usually have a vision for what each scene should look like, and my artist, who is superb, may look at it a different way. Then I usually take a deep breath and rewrite the story to fit his art.

Do you make your own covers?

For the Tales series, I use an illustration that the artist gives me and design my own covers. For my novels, I hire a professional to design the covers.

What are you working on now?

I have the illustrations for Tale #5 waiting for me to incorporate into the story. I need to do that as soon as I get past the holidays. My hope is to write the rough drafts for Tales #6 and #7 (the last one) this spring.

Do you write in any other genres?

I write Christian novels as well. The Forever Stone is first in The Dumont Chronicles. It is the story of a young widow who, desperate to escape the memories of her abusive husband, joins her aunt’s house-restoration project in the Pine Barrens. She is determined to take a stand for independence, but two men have different plans for her—and so does God. http://www.amazon.com/The-Forever-Stone-Gloria-Repp-ebook/dp/B00AKZO1HI/

I have just released the next in the series: Deep Focus, which centers on an adventurous photographer, another of the Dumont women. http://www.amazon.com/Deep-Focus-The-Dumont-Chronicles-ebook/dp/B00H8CKKYE/

What other genre(s) would you like to write some day?

I’d like to write historical fiction, beginning with stories of the Dumont women in Colonial days.

Hi everyone!  I have been doing some reflecting and pondering lately.  Maybe it is because I have been answering interview questions for a few people who will be interviewing me on their blogs.  More than likely, it is just the way I am.  I like to reflect and ponder.
I have thought about how I have grown as a writer, illustrator, formatter, marketer, and person from when I first started a little over a year ago.  (Well, I started as a person a little longer ago than that.)
I have met quite a few kind people along the way who have been willing to help me, encourage me, advise me, promote me, etc.  We have shared, chatted, brainstormed, and helped each other.  I have truly built friendships along the way.
In the beginning I was a beginner in all of it.  Today, I still consider myself a beginner as I am still fairly new to the field.  Yet, I am feeling more confident in the field and more experienced.  Maybe, I could even consider myself in the intermediate level!
I have made quite a few changes along the way.  Recently, I changed the cover to one of my books, "Clarinda Cloud," to make it more eye catching.  I didn't think of that as much in the beginning.  Yet, the importance of cover designs means more to me now and my illustrating skills have improved.
In the beginning, I also "liked" pages and shared things by other authors without considering my target audience, the family friendliness of my sites, or the quality of the things I was liking and sharing in hopes that other authors would return the favor.  Yet, I have decided to be more discriminate in what I share or like.  I want to "know" more about the things I like or share, so I can really stand behind them.  I try not to say anything I don't mean or know about a book or author any more.
I still hope to be able to share, like, and promote books and authors.  There are many wonderful books and authors out there.  I just want to make sure that I am being honest with my shares, likes, and promotions.  And, just because I don't recommend a book, it may not be that it is a great story.  It may be that it has some errors in it.  Sometimes if there errors were fixed, I would happily give a glowing review!
I am currently thinking of ways I could help encourage quality work in 2014 and beyond.  I have thought about possibly offering a proofreading service for children's/MG/YA authors.  If I don't do it myself, I have thought about creating a network and offering referrals to other wonderful people who do author friendly services such as editing, proofreading, formatting, PR work, illustrating, cover creations, etc. I have also thought about creating a "write and publish your own children's book" class or mentoring program.  (Yes, I am only at the intermediate level with this, however I am an experienced educator.  And, often times people will choose people just a little ahead of them in the progress to support them, so that they feel the supporter "knows how they feel and what they are going through" because he or she was there not long ago.)
Research and considerations are in progress for these things now.  I would like to get your feedback and ideas.  Also, if you would be interested in joining the network, please feel free to contact me.

Notes and Announcements

*Please check out the latest interview of me.  It is by Fiona McVie and she did a wonderful job!  Thank you, Fiona!
*Along with all of this reflecting and pondering, I have been thinking about how I could make my sites better.  I would like your help there as well.  For mainly that reason, I am offering a giveaway contest on my blogs.  For more information and a chance to enter, please follow the links the posts on the following sites.  I am hoping this chance for you to win a copy of "Clarinda Cloud" will be a win/win for both of us.
~DUO Education Learning Blog
~Clarinda Cloud's Feeling Blog
~What is New with Jodi Desautels?
Good luck!
*I am having a giveaway for my ebooks on Kindle on December 17th and 18th.  That means you will be able to get the Kindle edition of "Clarinda Cloud" and "Johnny's Adventure Makes Reading Fun" will be free on those days. Taking advantage of free giveaways on Kindle is a great way to decide if you want to buy the softcover, give the author a review on the book, or have it for trips and in the car.  (I don't particularly like the idea of ebooks for children, but they do have their uses.)
*Also, I am going to be co-hosting (with Virginia Wright) the "2nd Annual Author Christmas Giveaway" event on Facebook on December 17th.  You are all invited!  It is a great way to "mingle" with authors online, ask questions, get answers, play games, win books, etc.  Many authors are expected to show up.

Author Bill Hillman and his Movie; "Quigley's Christmas Adventure"

Picture
Hi everyone!  I would like you to meet Bill Hillman!  Bill has an impressive background as actor, writer, producer, director, songwriter, filmmaker, and author.  I hope I didn't miss anything, Bill.  LOL!  I told you it was impressive.
Let me show you the fundraising site that Bill has going to raise money in order to create his movie, "Quigley's Christmas Adventure."

Picture
I saw this poster come across my Facebook page!  Well, I like Christmas and I am all for cute animals, so I had to check it out!
I researched about Bill.  Then, I researched about "Quigley's Christmas Adventure,"  which is also a book and the book is available on Amazon.

Picture
Aw!  Here is a picture of the doggie auditions.  Isn't it such a cute doggie!?!  If the dog looks this cute for the audition, you can only imagine how cute it will be in the movie!
Okay.  This movie isn't just a movie with a cute dog.  No... and... it isn't a big business movie that we won't know anything about until after it is out.  No, this is a movie with which we all can be involved.
I had never heard of such a thing.  Maybe that is what caught my eye about this movie.  So, check out this video clip about "Quigley's Christmas Adventure."  If it is something you would like to help fund and be involved with... you can follow this link to Kicktarter.  I know times are hard... but Bill will even tell you that the minimum donation of $5.00 will get you involved and keep you connected with this film.  Every little bit helps.

Picture
I mentioned some of Bill's impressive background in the beginning of this blog post.  And, from the picture, you can tell that Bill loves dogs.  Yet, when I said that I wanted to post about Bill's film, I told him that I wanted him to share something that is not on his website.  This is what he shared with me:

When I was in the Military Academy, we vowed not to lie, steal or cheat, but I fudged in journalism and took a shortcut. Instead of reading a few books and writing reports, I made up my own books and then review them. Of course I got caught, but the end result was a promise I made to my professor .. to become a writer. It took work to regain his trust, but I made a promise and never broke it.

If you want to read more about Bill Hillman, please visit his site at www.williamhillman.com.  Please feel free to leave Bill or me a comment here.

Picture
Please remember that you still have a chance to win a free copy of "Clarinda Cloud" for the month.  Do you know where this photograph was taken?  You could win a free copy of "Clarinda Cloud" if you do.  Yes... it is on a tractor.  It is in Franklin County, Vermont.  It is at a place that sells pumpkins!  What is your guess?
Don't know?  That is okay.  You can comment anyway.  If nobody guesses, I will still donate a copy at an elementary school, library, daycare, or children's counsellor in the U.S.  Please comment recommending a place for me to donate a copy of "Clarinda Cloud."  Thank you.

An Author Interview with Kelly Hagen

10/23/2013

Picture
Hi everyone!  I would like to introduce to you another talented author, Kelly Hagen. I hope you will check out her work.  Hi Kelly.

Hello everyone! Thank you Jodi for having me as your guest, I appreciate that. My name is Kelly Hagen, and I'm the author of the recently released “Haunted by the Past”.

In “Haunted by the Past”, you’ll meet a young Christian named Nadia. Nadia’s life seemed to be just right, until one day when that all changed.

You’ll also meet Trent. Trent is a friendly guy, and has over a short amount of time grown very fond of Nadia.

But her past is making their friendship somewhat eventful.

Nadia never dreamed her life would be turned upside down, but that’s exactly what happened after her husband’s murder. After she receives a chilling letter in the mail soon after his death, she decides to move out of town, in hopes to leave it all behind. Trent has been praying for God to lead the right woman into his life. As soon as he lays eyes on Nadia he knows she’s the one. But will the situation they find themselves in be more than he can handle? Will their faith in God be enough to bring them through the uncertain future Nadia faces, letting their friendship grow into more
?

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
Growing up I never enjoyed writing, or reading for that matter. It wasn’t until a few years back that the reading “bug” got a hold of me. To my surprise I found that I actually enjoyed reading historical romance. That was a very odd thing to find out about myself!

I didn’t grow up wanting to be a writer, like some authors, if not most authors’ do. The thought never crossed my mind to be perfectly honest. But God had other plans. He’s opened the door for me on many different occasions and things continue to move forward. So, for as long as He leads me in this journey, I will follow.

I also enjoy spending time with my family, and listening to music. That is one thing I have always enjoyed.

2. Have you written other books? If so, what are the titles?
As a matter of fact I have. I have a children’s book that was published in 2011 called “Jake and Jesus”. It’s a story about a boy and his best friend- Jesus. You can find it on Amazon.

3. Why do you write?
I write to glorify God, and to bring encouragement to others. I write to let people know, that no matter how old we are or what we’re going through God is there. He loves us.

4. Do you use an outline, plot, or just see where the story takes you?
I just see where the story takes me. I write what God places on my heart, and when God places it on my heart. I’m not one (at least not yet) that can sit down and “force” myself to write. I’ve tried that in the past and let me tell you, it did not turn out well. All that could change in time though.

5. Do you ever get writers block? If so how do you overcome it?
I don’t know that I’d call it writers block. There are just times of silence where I don’t write. Then from out of no where all these ideas and words will hit me. That’s when I tend to be in front of my computer for hours at time.

6. Do you prefer to read ebooks, paperback, or hardback?
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my kindle…but…nothing takes the place of me being able to hold a book in my hands and turn the pages.

7. What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on the story of Trent’s past.  I hope to have it out early next year.

8. What is your favorite book of the Bible?
My favorite book of the Bible is James. I think it really helps me to keep myself in check.

9. Where can readers find your books?
You can find “Haunted by the Past” & “Jake and Jesus” on Amazon.

You can find me on:

Kelly, thank you for stopping by and sharing your work with us.  I hope all of you will check out Kelly's books.
And, please don't forget the giveaway for "Clarinda Cloud."  Do you know where this photograph was taken?
This one seems to be a tough one.  So, I will give you another hint.  Local Vermonters would probably recognize this better than anyone else.  This tractor is located in Franklin County, Vermont.  Do you know where in Franklin County it is located?  If so, please comment for your free book.  If not, please comment the name of an elementary school, library, daycare, or children's counselor where I should donate a copy if nobody guesses!

My First TV Interview!

Picture
Hi everyone!  I have some exciting news!!!  I had my first television interview on Sunday night!  I was on my local access channel, VCAM, channel 15.
I was interviewed by Cathy Hartley on her program, Art Break.  We are both kind of beginners at the whole TV scene.  But... we had fun and we look forward to doing it again!  I have been told that it was pretty good!
It was strange.  I wasn't nervous all week prior to the interview.  Then, that night, I was really nervous.  I am thankful that Cathy did a great job at calming me down.  I appreciate it!  Yes... I was still a little nervous, but not nearly as much!
On the show, I talked about my children's books:  "Clarinda Cloud," "Clarinda Cloud Activity Book," and "Johnny's Adventure Makes Reading Fun." Our discussion led to their educational and psychological value.  I also
talked about my passion for education and my educational site, DUO Education.  And, of course, I talked about some of my pages and services on the DUO Education site, such as:  "The Storyteller's Tale webinar series," "Online Tutoring," and the "DUO Education Learning Blog."
If you are local to Vermont and happened to see it, please leave me a comment or contact me!  If you didn't see it, I am hoping to get a DVD copy and then figuring out a way to post a copy or a blip of it on some of my sites.  So...stay tuned on more information on that!

I want to thank Cathy for having me on her show!  Also... if you are a local artist, author, musician, etc.  you can contact Cathy about being on her show by emailing her at artbreakvt@gmail.com.

Another page that is different on this site is a page that has products that have caught my eye.  I don't necessarily know anything about these products, but for one reason or another they have caught my eye.  Yet, feel free to order them from this site.  I do get a small stipend from the sale if you order from here.  If there are any other reader/writer/illustrator products you think I should post, please feel free to let me know.  I will add more from time to time, so please come back and check out the page often.  Thank you.
